Does insurance cover mobility equipment?
Medicare, New York Medicaid, and private insurance can help pay for wheelchairs, scooters, lift chairs, hospital beds, and more when it's medically necessary. Here's how it works.
Short answer: yes, mobility equipment is often covered — Medicare Part B, New York Medicaid, and many private plans pay for medically necessary durable medical equipment (DME) like wheelchairs, power scooters, hospital beds, and patient lifts when a doctor prescribes it. What's covered and what you pay depends on your plan and medical need.
Medicare
Medicare Part B may cover medically necessary durable medical equipment — including manual and power wheelchairs, mobility scooters, hospital beds, walkers, and patient lifts — when your doctor documents that you need it for use in your home and you get it from a Medicare-enrolled supplier. You generally pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount after your Part B deductible. For lift chairs, Medicare may cover the seat-lift mechanism only, not the rest of the chair.
New York Medicaid
New York Medicaid may cover medically necessary DME for eligible members — typically with a prescription and prior authorization. Coverage and requirements vary by plan and member, so it's best to confirm before you order.
Private insurance & financing
Private and Medicare Advantage plans vary widely in what they cover. If coverage is limited, we also offer financing options and short- and long-term mobility equipment rentals so you can get the equipment you need without waiting. Browse all mobility products or ask us about power wheelchairs, hospital beds, and lift chairs.
How to get mobility equipment covered
- Talk to your doctor. Ask your physician for a prescription and documentation of medical necessity. Coverage almost always requires a doctor to confirm the equipment is needed for use in the home.
- Confirm your coverage. Call your Medicare, Medicaid, or private plan to ask what durable medical equipment (DME) is covered and what your share of cost will be. Our team can help you understand your options.
- Choose an eligible supplier. Coverage typically requires an enrolled or in-network supplier. Confirm the requirements for your plan before you order.
- Submit documentation. Your prescription and any prior-authorization paperwork are submitted to the plan. New York Medicaid usually requires prior authorization for DME.
- We help with the rest. Maxximum Mobility helps with paperwork guidance, delivery, and setup so you can focus on getting the equipment you need.
